Earth Can Look After Herself – Save Yourselves
Thursday, December 17th, 2009Save the Earth is the cry at Copenhagen this week. Global warming is supposedly killing our planet and we should all be taking steps to save our one and only home.
In the Earths long history it has survived a collision with the planet Thea, smashing its twin to pieces which later went on to reform as the Moon.
It has survived countless ice ages including the one we happen to be in at the moment.
It has survived cosmic attack from at least 150 large meteors of which at least one was big enough to set the entire globe on fire and wipe out 95% of all life that inhabited it at the time.
The Earth has survived countless volcanic eruptions many of which make the Krakatua eruption seem a hiccup.
It has survived Methane Hydrate eruptions which have caused massive global temperature swings and left its entire surface buried under hundreds of meters of solid ice.
It has stood up to all these catastrophic events and survived. It will go on surviving for a further 5 billion years until one day it is swallowed up by our dying Sun as it expands in its final death throes before finally collapsing in on itself and becoming nothing more than a dull white dwarf.
Global warming is almost certainly upon us. The seas are rising, the weather is changing. Crops will start to fail, less places will be habitable while the population continues to explode.
Future generations are going to inherit some serious shit from us.
So my question is this – why are the people demonstrating outside the Copenhagen Climate Council waving banners saying save our planet?
The Earth has survived far worse things than mankind. We have been and probably will never be more than a mere blip on its lifespan.
Surely the cry should really be “Stop global warming and save ourselves”
