Christmas Dinners in Douglas – Part Deux
Having already reviewed the Christmas dinner in Jaks, I was going to continue and do a review of each of the others I sampled but I would just end up repeating myself so instead, here’s a round up.
My second Christmas dinner was in The British on Douglas quay.
The blackboard said traditional Christmas dinner plus Christmas pudding for £9.95 but I didn’t want the pudding so ordered without and was told I would still have to pay the full price as it comes as a package.
Christmas pudding is not to everyone’s taste so why not offer an alternative dessert or better yet, knock £2 off the bill? I took note of a work party ordering dessert and out of 6, only 2 did so a nice little earner for the brewery if you don’t mind ripping off your customers.
Vegetables arriving in their own bowl was a nice touch but this was a very poor dinner and very poor value for money. A couple of Aunt Bessies roast potatoes and 2 slices of Jack Frost’s frozen turkey hardly constitutes a traditional Christmas dinner.
My third Christmas dinner was in The Old Courthouse and at £18.95 this was the dearest. The mash potatoes were to die for, the turkey was freshly carved and dropped to bits as you forked it, vegetables were fresh and nicely steamed – this was a very nice dinner.
The only fault I had was that the gravy was a little over powering and dominated the taste. The portions were a little on the small side as well although this was in a restaurant so it was meant to be part of a 3 course meal.
Fourth Christmas dinner was at Coasters on the quay. Or at least it should have been but they don’t do one. They do a turkey fajitas for Christmas but you have to pre-order. I ended up with a plain steak as it was the only meal on the menu not smothered in cheese.
Steak was ok and prices very reasonable. There were 4 of us and with drinks was under £70. Would have been nice though to see a traditional dinner on the menu for Christmas.
Finished shopping on Christmas eve around 3pm so had time for one final Christmas dinner before the Christmas day dinner proper at home. Decided to go back to where I had my first – Jaks on the prom.
They were doing food upstairs in the bar area and the place was packed with diners. Ordered a couple of Christmas dinners and was not disappointed as it was just as good as the first one I’d had a week earlier.
While not quite matching the taste delights of the one from The Old courthouse, for £8.95 it had to be the best in Douglas, probably the best on the island.
Including yesterday’s with the family, I managed 5 Christmas dinners in 7 days (would have been 6 if Coasters had one on the menu) so I’m quite pleased its Boxing day. Today its cold turkey for a change!
